WILDCATS LOOK TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO FIVE.
Nottingham Wildcats entertain Team Northumbria this weekend looking for their fifth straight victory. The game was scheduled as a Northumbria home game, but due to extenuating circumstances, it has been switch to the Wildcats Arena, with a 5pm tip-off.
Last month the Wildcats defeated the team from the Northeast by 67pts to 46 on the back of a strong 3rd and 4th quarter defensive showing. Until then the game had been evenly match offensively with the Cats shading the first half by a mere 3pts.
Northumbria played two away games last weekend losing narrowly to Barking Abbey by 75pts to 71, before defeating Sevenoaks comfortably on the Sunday, by 75pts to 62. In those games the bulk of the scoring came from Vickers, Carr and Rodriguez, with Vickers notching an impressive 42pts for the two games.
The Wildcats had just the one game, at home to Leeds Carnegie, in what turned out to be their fourth straight win. Leeds had no answer to the Wildcats high powered offence which accumulated an impressive 93pts. Emma Pass had a season high 17pts, whilst Abby Wentworth had a career night with 26pts. Flood and Prior also scored freely with 23pts and 17pts respectively.
The Wildcats are clearly beginning to gel offensively with Abby Wentworth yet to be on the losing side, since her signing in January. However it is at the defensive end that matches are won and the Wildcats are still prone to defensive lapses that could cost them in tight games. That will be the key this weekend, closing down the Team Northumbria offence, whilst remaining an offensive threat themselves.
The Wildcats are currently one loss behind third placed Barking Abbey who play against Sevenoaks, who are tied on six losses with the Wildcats. A win for Barking on Saturday, coupled with a Wildcats victory will see the Cats move above Sevenoaks on losses and into a play-off spot. Which considering that going into the New Year the Wildcats were anchored to the foot of the table, is some achievement.
