Nottingham Hoods

“Gets kids off the streets, out of their seats and active.” These are the key aims of Nottingham’s basketball club, The Hoods.

Tired of seeing Nottingham’s young people fall into the category of “yobbos” or the “play station generation”, local basketball Coach Lee English bounced into action and created The Hoods in 2009. A totally non profit club aimed at anyone who can walk on a court and bounce a ball from the ages of 5 – 500.

Aiming to slam the stereotypical image of the young people and to get the community thinking, the name was carefully chosen to fit with Nottingham’s most famous resident, Robin Hood, another local hero who was smashing stereotyping before his time, but the name also carries a deeper meaning. The image of young people in hoods is often not a welcome one but The Hoods Basketball Club is aiming to spin that image on it’s head – Literally!

The master plan was to put basketball back on the map in Nottingham and by 2011 The Hoods already had Junior teams competing at u12, u14, u16 and u18 level, a successful Ladies local league team and a National Championship under their belts courtesy of the Senior Men’s National League Team. Nottingham basketball is very much back, so watch out for The Hoods influencing a venue near you soon as we continue to provide the local community with a chance to see the biggest indoor spectator sport worldwide.
